Polychrome Painted "The Game of the Goose," America, early 19th century, square game board with applied molding, and a painted spiraling playing field with 63 spaces, seventeen with painted symbols for obstacles and shortcuts, the field painted in shades of black, white, red, and mustard yellow, the center with applied paper and ink inscription describing the rules of the game, 24 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. Note: The Game of the Goose is a game of disputed origin, but it reached the height of its popularity in the 1700s.
