William Wallace Gilchrist, Jr. (American, 1879-1926) Evening alternatively titled Hungry Deer Approaching Near to Human Habitation Signed "W.W. Gilchrist" l.l., identified on an exhibition label (see below) on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 40 x 64 in. (101.7 x 162.6 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Retouch, craquelure. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine. Exhibitions: Thirty-eighth Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture, Art Institute of Chicago, October 29-December 13, 1925. N.B. The Portland Museum of Art approaches the decision to deaccession objects from its permanent collection with the utmost caution in adherence to a strict collections management policy that reflects the standards of the American Association of Museums. The proceeds from the sale of deaccessioned works of art are used only for the acquisition of other works more relevant to the Museum's mission. This process allows the Museum to better care for what it retains while strengthening the collection with new acquisitions.
