Painted Joined and Paneled Maple and Pine Chest-over-Drawer, Hatfield-Hadley, Massachusetts area, c. 1720, the thumb-molded top attached with original cotter pins overhangs a cavity with three frontal recessed panels above a drawer with an interior divider flanked by recessed panel sides on turned legs, early pulls and old brown paint, (one pull missing), ht. 36, wd. 41 case wd. 38, dp. 19 1/8, case dp. 18 1/2 in. Provenance: Family descent from John Clap (b. 1708, d. 1791), who married Eunice Parsons in 1732. They moved to Montague, Massachusetts, in 1750. John Clap's mother was from Hatfield; his father from Northampton, Massachusetts. This chest descended in the family from John, Solomon, Eliphaz, Richard, Charles, Edwin to the contemporary family consignor.
