Cast Iron Stove Plate, made by ironmaster Thomas Potts, cast at Mt. Pleasant or Colebrookdale furnace, Pennsylvania, 1758, right side plate of five-plate jamb stove, open-sand cast with design of double arches supported on twisted columns, under the right arch are tulips in fluted urns, a swag, a sheaf of wheat, lozenge motifs, and two eight-point stars; under the left arch are tulips, swag, and a sheaf of wheat in a heart within an aureole supported on sheeps legs; inscriptions below read "LAS. DICH. DAS. BESSE. NICHT." (be not overcome of evil) with the word "UBERWUNDEN" (overcome) missing and likely on the front plate; lower cartouche with the date 1758 and maker "THOMAS. POTS" flanked by tulip and heart designs, 23 5/8 x 23 1/2 in. Literature: A similar example of the stove plate is illustrated in The Bible in Iron, by Henry C.
