Attributed to William Matthew Prior, (American, 1806-1873) Portrait of Elizabeth Southwick, Inscribed on the reverse of wood panel backing "Paid $5. 00 By W.M. Prior 1844." Oil on cardboard, depicting a woman wearing spectacles, and a lace bonnet and fichu, seated before a red velvet curtain, 14 1/8 x 10 in., framed. Condition: Minor craquelure. A note accompanying the lot reads"Miss Elizabeth Southwick. of Newport R.I. Born-1777 Died Feb. 14 1844, married James Brightman April 1797 - Nellie Strobridge Feb. 27, 1936."
