Maskelyne & Cooke’s Mysteries. The Artist’s Dream. London: Dangerfield, ca. 1894. Handsome lithographed poster depicts the stage illusion in which a painting of a woman comes to life as if dreamed by an artist into being. 15 1/2 x 19 1/2". Minor over-coloring in top margin, A-. Scarce. While the Artist’s Dream illusion was invented by David Devant, his name does not appear on this poster advertising it. It was not until 1905 that Devant became managing partner of the Maskelyne magic empire, almost single-handedly saving the business from financial ruin. Until that time, he was relegated to the role of company member at Egyptian Hall, despite his obvious prowess and charm as a performer.
