French, early 20th century. A Cartier (French, 1847- ) 14k gold and sterling silver ladies compact with engraved line pattern on top and bottom punctuated by two perpendicular bands of inlaid gold on either side, with rectangular inlaid gold monogram cartouches on either side reading "HMD" and "FJD MRD". Interior reveals a mirror on top and an open compartment on bottom for powder, with a square silk insert. In original silk lined box with inscription interior lid "Cartier, New York, Paris, London". Engraved on lower interior rim "14k & Sterling" with an unidentified sterling makers's mark, "20 GP" and signed "Cartier". Approximately 63mm x 63mm square and 86.7 grams.
