A handwritten document by Booker T. Washington, circa 1883, written on Tuskegee Normal School, For Training Colored Teachers (Tuskegee University in Tennessee) letterhead. Washington served as the school's first president from 1881-1915. The document being an amendment to the act to establish a Normal School for Teachers at Tuskegee two years after its founding in 1881. The five page document includes sections which cover tops such as free tuition to pupils per agreement to teach in local public schools for at least two years, appropriation of funds to manage the school, an appointment of board members George W. Campbell, M.B. Swanson, and Lewis Adams, quarterly reporting to the state department of education, and designation of the Chairman of the Board's bond. A notation at the end of the letter reads "Approved February 16, 1883". The act is unsigned. Pages approximately 11" x 8.75". Provenance: From the Estate of Booker T. Washington. Note on provenance: Copy of letter from Booker T. Washington's granddaughter, Robin Washington Banks, confirming provenance is available upon request. Letter states her inheritance of the estate and its ultimate sale to the consignor of this lot.
