(Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer, and the first to settle the South Pole in 1911. He then flew across the North Pole with Lincoln Ellsworth. 'Portrait of Richard Wagner (1813-1883)' 18" x 11 1/2", signed with estate stamp on back: S.J. Woolf. This is a unique trial proof with numerous pencil notations in Chinese white and pencil by the artist. 'Portrait of Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964), 15 7/8" x 11 1/2". Samuel Johnson Woolf began his career during World War I, where as an active soldier at the front, he sketched dramatically real battle scenes, and drew pictures of both soldiers and statesmen.
