GUSTAVO MANCINELLI, OIL ON CANVAS, 1877, 40" X 29", PORTRAIT OF JULIA NEWBERRY: ITALIAN 1842-1906:Framed. Julia Newberry was the daughter of Walter Loomis Newberry, founder of the Newberry Library in Chicago. Signed and dated along lower left side "Gustavo Mancinelli Roma 1877." Background: Walter Loomis Newberry was born in East Windsor, CT in 1804, and educated in Clinton, NY. He moved to Buffalo, NY with his brother in 1822, they then moved to Detroit, MI and went into the dry goods business with great success. Later he toured the great lakes with General Lewis Cass and William B. Astor, purchasing land at various points, including Chicago, where he moved in 1833. Here he continued in dry goods, and also became involved in banking and rail operations. For Six (6) years he was president of the Chicago Historical Society. He died in 1860. Julia was One (1) of Two (2) daughters, neither had children. Since he had no grandchildren, Walter Loomis Newberry's will donated half of his estate to fund the creation of a library, now the Newberry Library in Chicago. His widow died in 1885, daughter Mary died in 1874 in southern France and daughter Julia died in 1876 in Rome.
