American School, first quarter 20th century. "Portrait of Brother and Sister", oil on canvas laid down on masonite, apparently unsigned. Large format portrait painting depicting two stoic children in an interior, a brother and sister of similar age with the girl seated with a small picture book in her lap and wearing a modest burgundy dress with pleated skirt and having white ruffled shirt sleeves and collar in view under it, and the boy standing to left with his hand resting through the crook of the sister's elbow and wearing a dark blue suit with jacket and short pants over stockinged legs and black leather boots, the pair each wearing a thin gold ring on one hand and with their dark hair brushed back off their porcelain faces which display solemn expressions, the figures set in an interior space decorated with red oriental rug with open doorway to left revealing a lush green landscape beyond it. Framed approximately 49.75" x 36.75", unframed approximately 41" x 27.625". Provenance: From the Exum Family Estate in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
