Molded Copper and Cast Lead Centaur Weather Vane, attributed to A. L. Jewell & Co., Waltham, Massachusetts, 1852-1867, the flattened full-body figure drawing a bow and arrow with molded sheet copper tail, the surface with vestiges of yellow sizing, gilt, verdigris, and black paint, (repairs), ht. 32 1/4, wd. 39 1/4 in. Provenance: Benjamin A. Green, Lexington, Massachusetts. Literature: A similar vane attributed to A.L. Jewell is illustrated in The Art of the Weathervane by Steve Miller, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Exton, Pennsylvania, p. 66. Another owned by the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont is illustrated in Weather Vanes: The History, Design, and Manufacture of an American Folk Art, by Charles Klamkin, Hawthorn Books, Inc. publishers, New York on page164.
