Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909) A Mountain Man , alternately titled Gingras the Trapper , 1892 Signed and inscribed "Frederic Remington/'a mountain man'" l. r. Ink and wash on illustration board, 17 1/4 x 13 in. (44.0 x 32.9 cm), framed. Condition: Acid burn, mild toning. Provenance: The estate of John Hay, Bremen, Maine, and Brewster, Massachusetts. Literature: Hassrick, Peter H., and Melissa J. Webster, Frederic Remington: a catalogue raisonne of paintings, watercolors, and drawings (Cody, Wyoming: Buffalo Bill Historical Center, 1996), cat. no. 1400, p. 411. N.B. Created in 1892 for The Oregon Trail by J. Francis Parkman, Jr., (1) the illustration appears in the volume as a 3/4 page reproduction without the inscription "a mountain man" and with the name "Kurtz" written in block capital letters in the blank area just below the grass under the most forward horse hoof.
