Yeats: a catalogue raisonné of the oil paintings (London: A. Deutsch, 1992), cat. no. 60, p. 54. N.B. Jack Butler Yeats was one of the leading artists of Ireland in the 20th century. He began his career as an illustrator and turned to painting in oils c. 1906. Born in London, Yeats had strong family ties to Ireland and was raised in the home of his maternal grandparents in Sligo. He developed a great love for Ireland and delighted in painting its landscape and people. He was elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1916. Yeats embodied his own belief that an artist must be part of the land and the life he painted. The Yeatses were an artistic and literary family: Jack's father, John Butler Yeats, was a noted portraitist, the poet William Butler Yeats was Jack's brother, and Jack's wife, Mary "Cottie" Cottenham, was also an artist and illustrator. He counted among his friends Oskar Kokoschka and Samuel Beckett.
