American, circa 1880's. Alaska Star Michigan City, Indiana oak two door ice box, the rectangular paneled top over two doors paneled with the original cast brass hinges and door catches, and enclosing zinc interior, raised on casters. The front retains original worn label. Height 68.75", width 36", depth 22.25". The Alaskan Refrigerator Company originated in Michigan City, Indiana, in 1878, and by 1891 The Muskegon Improvement Company offered them an incentive to relocate to Muskegon, Michigan. At that time The Alaskan Refrigerator Company was known as the largest maker of home iceboxes, and by 1892 they were filling forty-two large trains with four thousand iceboxes annually.
