Russian Icon Depicting the Sign Mother of God, late 19th century, shown with her hands raised and with Christ within a painted circle raising his hand in blessing, on a punch-decorated gilt background with a painted border of abstract patterning, 20 7/8 x 16 3/8 in. Made up of two panels which have separated slightly: related paint damage to the front, and reglued to the reverse. Minor craquelure and loss to painted surface (most associated with damage to panel backing). Panel with scattered nicks and small cracks particualarly to edges. A knot in the panel has resulted in an area of paint loss to the lower left side of Mary's robes. One wedge removed.
