Persian Pen Box, c. 1271 AH/AD 1854-55, Qalamdan , polychrome lacquered papier-mache, rectangular form with rounded ends, the top painted with a central cartouche depicting European subjects at leisure, the sides with landscape scenes interspersed with flowers and birds, the bottom painted in gilt on red ground with a pair of birds perched on a blossoming tree, the sliding tray decorated with gilt landscape scenes on red ground, signed and dated, lg. 8 3/4 in.
